Templeton DDS Wind Turbine

SERVICE:

Acoustic Study

DESCRIPTION:

An acoustic study was performed on the property of the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services (DDS) Templeton Developmental Center for two potential wind turbines. Either a Vestas V90 or a GE 1.7 turbine, both with 80-meter hub heights, would be placed on the property in two different locations. Tech measured existing sound levels and wind speeds at the project site, and sound levels in nearby residential areas. To accomplish this, they set up a long term sound monitoring system (14 day period) following all appropriate ANSI standards. Following the 14 days, Tech modeled the propagation and attenuation of the sound using a 3D model. Predicted sound levels at the nearest residential property line/ residence were tabulated and the increase above the ambient sound level was calculated. Tech concluded that both of the wind turbines that were being considered for the project would comply with the MassDEP Noise Policy, therefore not creating a nuisance.

Key Points

  • Tech performed a long term acoustic study for a property where one of two wind turbines would be proposed.
  • Through the sound monitoring and acoustic modeling, Tech found that both of the wind turbines would comply with the MassDEP noise policy and would not create a nuisance at the nearest residence/ residential property.
