Mathworks Headquarters Water Pumps

SERVICE:

Noise Consulting

DESCRIPTION:

The headquarters of Mathworks, a world leading developer of technical computing software for engineers and scientists, was experiencing interior noise issues from a pair of recently installed water supply pumps. Sounds created by the pumps were making adjacent office space inhabitable for an acceptable working environment. Tech assessed the sound levels emitted by the pumps, the sound mitigating effects of the building materials separating the rooms, and analyzed the noise levels in the adjacent office space in accordance with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Criteria for Evaluating Room Noise. The study determined that the sound levels in the room were too high and sound mitigation should be explored. Tech recommended various noise mitigation measures inside the pump room, as well as increasing the sizing pipes connected to the pumps to reduce the excessive turbulence which was creating the high noise levels.

Key Points

  • Two recently installed water supply pumps were creating inappropriate sound levels in an adjacent office spaces.
  • Tech assessed the sound levels created by the pumps, confirmed that office sound levels were not appropriate, and recommended sound mitigation measures including improving the piping configurations around the pumps.
