SERVICE:
Sound Study
DESCRIPTION:
A new fan unit was set to be installed on the roof of the VA Medical Center in West Haven, CT. Tech was asked to assess the indoor noise level that would result from the fan installation. The planned installation of the fan was on a sub-roof, and the unit faced some windows. Tech was asked to perform a site visit assessing the current windows and to make mitigation recommendations based on the findings to ensure the fan unit would not cause excessive indoor sound levels. Upon arrival, Tech noted that within the courtyard where the fan unit would be located, there were already several pieces of mechanical equipment that were operating. Tech was able to conclude that the noise emitted from the new fan unit would be negligible compared with the mechanical equipment already in operation. Even with this conclusion, Tech collected spot measurements to correctly assess the existing acoustic conditions of the facility. Measurements were collected both inside the facility and outside where the fan location had been proposed. Through the findings, Tech was able to conclude that the estimated sound level, produced by the fan unit, would be less than the recommended interior sound level for hospital rooms/ offices, and therefore the proposed unit would not cause a disturbance with any adjacent interior spaces.
Key Points
- The level of disturbance that a proposed installation of a new fan unit at the VA Medical Center, needed to be addressed.
- Tech performed a site inspection of the proposed locations as well as collected spot measurements to determine if the noise from the unit would comply with the interior sound level for hospital rooms/ offices.
