Air Quality Compliance Monitoring

DESCRIPTION:

Aggregate Industries (AI) is required to conduct annual air quality compliance monitoring per the City of Peabody Certificate of Decision Special Permit Application. The objective of each monitoring program is to confirm that the hot mix asphalt plant and quarry operations comply with occupational and residential exposure standards and National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). For each individual monitoring location, Tech sets up samplers and monitors for the collection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and particulate matter (PM10) over a three day period. The four sampling locations, along the perimeter of the site are similar every year, if not the same. To be conservative, the air quality measurements are collected when the plant is in full operation. In 2012 and 2013, the measured VOCs and SVOCs were well below the occupational exposure standards and the PM10 concentrations also measured were below the 24-hour National and Massachusetts AAQS for PM10. Based off of these results, Tech was able to conclude that the perimeter ambient air quality monitoring test program satisfied all of the requirements of Aggregate's Special Permit with the City of Peabody for 2012 and 2013. Tech is in the process of completing the 2014 sampling program.

Key Points

  • Aggregate Industries is required to do conduct annual air quality compliance monitoring to determine that the hot mix asphalt plant and quarry operations comply with applicable standards.
  • Tech performs this monitoring thoroughly and efficiently every year. Thus far, the results of all contaminants measured have been below exposure standards.
