Emergency Generator Sound Study

DESCRIPTION:

Tech assessed the potential impacts from an emergency generator that was to be installed in the same building as an apartment unit. The generator would be located inside the existing boiler room on the basement level. It would only run during the day for brief periods of testing and would be fully operational only if there was a power outage. Using conservative parameters, Tech calculated preliminary sound levels that would be heard inside the apartment located directly above the generator, if the generator were running. The calculated, predicted sound levels were found to be unacceptable, and therefore, Tech recommended mitigation measures that were both cost effective, efficient, and complied with the recommended sound levels for Apartments.

Key Points

  • A sound study was conducted to assess the potential adverse impacts a proposed emergency generator could have on an apartment unit located directly above it.
  • Tech calculated the predicted sound levels, found them to be unacceptable according to the ANSI standard and recommended cost effective mitigation measures.
