Weston and Sampson: Waterbury Truck Garage Idling

SERVICE:

Third-Party Air Quality Assessment

DESCRIPTION:

Tech Environmental was retained by Weston and Sampson Engineers to provide a third party air quality assessment. Tech was to assess potential air emissions from vehicles idling inside a proposed new vehicle storage garage in Waterbury, CT. This air quality assessment was to confirm that the garage would be in compliance with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). The NAAQS are designed to protect public health and welfare within a margin of safety.

Tech estimated reasonable worst-case emissions from vehicles idling inside the proposed Waterbury garage using vehicle emission data from the current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) MOBILE 6.2 model. The EPA-approved AERMOD dispersion model was then used to predict potential worst-case impacts to the surrounding area, including the adjacent buildings. The dispersion modeling results revealed that the proposed garage would comply with the NAAQS limits. Therefore, Tech was able to certify that emission exhaust from vehicles idling in the garage will not have an adverse affect on public health.
