Walgreens - Portland, ME

SERVICE:

Noise Impact Assessment

DESCRIPTION:

Tech Environmental was retained by Gorrill-Palmer Associates to conduct a sound study for a proposed Walgreens Store in Portland, Maine. In its approval of the project, the Portland Planning Board set the following conditions: "The applicant shall provide a pre-development assessment of noise levels at the property line along with a prediction of decibel levels at the property line for the proposed rooftop mechanical units from the manufacturer for review and approval by the Planning Authority prior to the issuance of a building permit." Tech conducted both an ambient sound monitoring program and acoustic modeling analysis to satisfy the Board's conditions.

Tech collected pre-development sound level measurements and found that background levels were typical for a community business zone, taking into account representive motor vehicle traffic on nearby streets and occasional aircraft flying overhead. Acoustic modeling of the cumulative effects from all rooftop HVAC units and the drive-through window system revealed that maximum potential sound levels would fully comply with the Portland Noise Ordinance limits.
