SERVICE:

Noise Impact Assessment

DESCRIPTION:

Tech Environmental was retained by Woodard and Curran to conduct a sound level (noise) impact analysis for a 250-KW standby diesel generator at the Boston Convention Center. The sound level analysis was conducted as part of a regulatory compliance determination for the generator, supporting approval under the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) air permitting process. These predicted maximum sound levels were also compared to the City of Boston Noise Ordinance.

Tech conducted pre-construction baseline sound level measurements in the vicinity of the project site. Tech also developed noise emission levels for the standby generator. These data were used to predict maximum sound levels at nearby sensitive locations, using industry-standard acoustic modeling methodologies and incorporating necessary mitigation measures. The results of the acoustic analysis conclusively demonstrated that operation of the standby generator would not create a noise nuisance condition and would fully comply with the most stringent sound level limits set by the City of Boston and Massachusetts DEP Noise Policies.

Key Points

  • A 250-kW standby diesel generator intended to provide emergency power for the Boston Convention Center required noise permitting.
  • Tech conducted a noise impact study to demonstrate that the standby generator would comply with the City of Boston and MassDEP Noise Policies.
