Mishawum Station Residential Development

SERVICE:

Residential Environmental Sound Level Analysis

DESCRIPTION:

The developers of the proposed Mishawum Station residential project on Mishawum Road in Woburn, Massachusetts were concerned with the potential of nuisance noise.  The project was located adjacent Interstate 95 and the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) commuter rail line.

Tech Environmental documented the existing sound levels at the proposed project, and conducted acoustic modeling of the existing sound levels throughout the parcel to establish what the potential noise would be at the building wall and in a proposed garage.  The garage was an underground garage but open to the adjacent 95.

The real concern was not the exterior noise, for the thought was that the residents were willing to trade some exterior noise for easy commuting both via highway and rail, but the potential interior noise; therefore, Tech evaluated the expected levels in the interior of the building after transmission losses of the walls was considered.  This work demonstrated that the expected indoor sound levels on the side of the buildings facing Interstate 95 would be acceptable with some changes in construction and that  noise barriers could make the outdoor areas of concern much quieter.

Key Points

  • The residential project was planned on a parcel adjacent a major highway and railroad tracks.
  • Tech evaluated the expected sound levels within the residences and recommended mitigation where necessary.
