West Islip Stop & Shop

SERVICE:

Noise Study for a Rehabilitated Grocery Store

DESCRIPTION:

The reconstruction of a Stop & Shop grocery store  in West Islip, New York on Long Island required local approval prior to construction, and existing sound sources of the present facility were already significant at abutting residences, particularly at upper level windows.  For local approval, the sound levels from the future rebuilt store would have to be equal to or quieter than the existing store; however, the store wanted to vastly improve the conditions for the neighbors.

Tech performed acoustic modeling of the loudest sounds from the Stop & Shop loading dock operations and how it affects the nearest residences.  A noise barrier was designed and modeling proved that maximum sounds from the new loading dock with the designed barrier wall would be 4 dBA  less than those from the existing dock operations - representing a 60% reduction in sound energy coming from loading dock operations, a noticeable improvement.

Key Points

  • An existing grocery store wanted to revise its layout to be more efficient, but local opposition would not allow any work to be completed without addressing existing noise concerns.
  • Tech designed a noise barrier and performed acoustic modeling to demonstarte a 60% reduction in sound level impacts.
