DESCRIPTION:

The Northampton Landfill, in Northampton, Massachusetts, had an existing candlestick flare and was interested in upgrading this flare to a new flare that would better match the landfill gas production level. The City required an air permit for this new enclosed landfill gas flare.

Tech Environmental conducted air dispersion modeling with an EPA approved air dispersion model to demonstrate that potential worst-case off-site impacts of air toxic compounds were well below regulatory thresholds for safe operation. The modeling predicted residual concentrations in the neighborhood below the allowable ambient limits (AALs) developed by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and risk-based screening concentrations developed by the EPA.
