Northampton Landfill Odor Monitoring

DESCRIPTION:

The Northampton Landfill, in Northampton, Massachusetts, decided to hire a firm that specializes in quantifying and qualifying odors around the facility and the adjacent neighborhood for a period of two weeks to establish a baseline of odor and to gather data during the time of day that seemed to correspond to the most odor complaints.

Tech odor control engineers and scientists have been screened for odor sensitivity and only those that fall in the typical olfactory range were used as responders for this project to monitor odors throughout the neighborhood and around the landfill. The evaluators used Tech Environmental's own Odor Intensity Referencing Scale (OIRS) jars, odor monitoring equipment, and characterized the odors to quantify and qualify the odors. Based on this monitoring, it was clear that in this rural area, not all odors were associated with the landfill, and that some odor complaints clearly could not possibly be related to the landfill.
