Tiverton Power Facility

SERVICE:

Power Plant Expansion Noise Study

DESCRIPTION:

The Tiverton Power facility, a 265-MW combined-cycle unit in Tiverton, Rhode Island, was originally constructed in the late 1990s and consisted of one GE Frame 7F turbine unit with an air-cooled condenser (ACC). In 2009 a facility expansion was considered that would add a second 265-MW unit to the facility, and double its potential power output.

Tech Environmental measured existing sound levels and acoustically modeled the future condition with the second unit in operation. The modeling was used to satisfy the Rhode Island Energy Facility Siting Board (EFSB) and the Town of Tiverton Zoning Board. The analysis demonstrated that the facility met both the EFSB allowable incremental noise increase and the Town of Tiverton Zoning Ordnance.

Key Points

  • In order to add a second turbine, this facility needed to demonstrate minimal increases in noise.
  • Tech conducted an incremental noise evaluation of the proposed expansion to demonstrate compliance.
