SERVICE:

Odor Control Recommendations for Amphidrome Plant

DESCRIPTION:

A large residential development exceeded the maximum flow requirements for a traditional septic system, and was required to install a package wastewater treatment plant. The wastewater treatment plant was located œremotely from the condominium complex, with sewers across some property that was owned by a third party. The giant leaching field created a beautiful meadow. The land around the plant was later acquired by a developer who installed his own set of condominiums that looked out over the meadow. Unfortunately, a number of the new units are within a few hundred feet of the existing treatment plant. The developer promised the new condominium owners that he would install odor control to prevent future nuisance conditions.

Tech was asked by the condominium association that owns the treatment plant to examine the odor control design proposed by the developer. The association was concerned that the developer would offer a marginally effective system that would not fully address the need, and that the new owners near the plant could later complain of nuisance conditions, and might attempt to hold the treatment plant owners liable. Tech found that the original design was potentially inadequate, and recommended improvements in odor capture, long-term odor control capacity, and dispersion. Tech provided a design alternative in order to mitigate future concerns.

Key Points

  • A condominium association's wastewater plant was located adjacent to new development, and the owners needed to ensure that the developer's offer to add odor control would be effective.
  • Tech studied the proposed design and found it inadequate, and recommended a sufficient design alternative that would mitigate future concerns.
