Casella Air Quality Strategic Planning

SERVICE:

Strategic Planning for Landfill

DESCRIPTION:

Tech was part of a corporate team to explore a landfill's ability to be a carbon sink for organic material to reduce the potential for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Tech explored many theoretical assumptions for emission estimating and capture, incorporated Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) formulas for estimating GHG, and then explored the real life consequences of these assumptions for three existing Casella landfills. The landfills chosen, each provided unique, real world conditions. One was a small municipal landfill that had been closed for some time; one was a regional landfill that was being closed; and one was an active reginal landfill. The results suggested that with certain design standards landfills could work as a better carbon sink than other disposal methods.

Key Points

  • Tech took theoretical assumptions for GHG emissions and applied them to three known landfills to explore possible changes to sequester more carbon.
  • Tech explored a number of "what-if" scenarios to estimate how various landfill design upgrades or modifications would change the ability of a landfill to capture carbon.
