Mt. Hope Rock

SERVICE:

Dispersion Modeling for AQ and Dust

DESCRIPTION:

The Mt. Hope Rock facility in Morris County, NJ, is a 700-acre site containing three asphalt plants, a rotary kiln for processing contaminated soil, and a rock quarry. Tech Environmental provided Mt. Hope Rock with an air dispersion modeling study to satisfy the requirements of the New Jersey DEP. This was a complicated undertaking because the facility is a complex source; the NJ DEP requires the approval of a detailed protocol before modeling is performed; the state has its own ambient air quality standards and requires that all criteria pollutants be addressed; and the state requires that all fugitive emissions sources be included in any modeling analysis.

Tech's experts made an initial site visit to collect information, obtained all relevant maps and meteorological data, developed a screening protocol and a modeling protocol, and performed dispersion modeling using an EPA approved model to determine the Significant Impact Area (SIA). Tech also met with the facility to strategize with regard to the presentation of the study's findings to the NJ DEP.

Key Points

  • The Mt. Hope Rock facility required technical assistance in meeting the New Jersey DEP's complex air and dust monitoring requirements.
  • Tech developed a sophisticated protocol to assist the facility in addressing its emissions and negotiating with state regulators.
