Air Quality Studies and Air Pollution Permitting
DESCRIPTION:
Tech Environmental has performed air quality work related to traffic, University expansion, boiler operation, and new generator capacity for the University of Vermont in Burlington.
An air quality study for the expansion of the Gutterson Field House (hockey arena) to add 700 seats to the existing capacity of 3,300 was completed based on concerns raised by the City regarding an increase in traffic. The air quality study of the expansion was performed at two roadway intersections on U.S. Route 2.
To fulfill the Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) regulations, an application for an indirect source air pollution permit was prepared for the expansion of parking at the University that also included the University Hospital Center, the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, and the former Trinity College. Microscale CO modeling was performed at 12 major intersections in the city for the Existing, Future No-Build, and Future Build conditions.
Tech Environmental also completed the air quality permit application for the addition of one 64 MMBtu/hr Cleaver Brooks boiler, and one 500 KW electric generator to the Central Heating Plant at the University. The application to the ANR included dispersion modeling, assuming a new stack height for the plant. A highly flexible fuel cap was designed for the plant, and the campus as a whole, to keep the University campus as a federal non-major source for NOX and SO2 emissions. ANR issued the permit.
